HFL Free Agency Tweak

In an effort to give teams a leg up in maintaining their rosters, Year V free agency will see the introduction of "home town discounts." Here's how it works. Every team will be asked to submit it's starting roster BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS BEGIN. Once you submit your STARTING roster, any players on that starting roster who become free agency eligible will still become a free agent. HOWEVER, if another team bids on that player, they will have to offer TEN MORE POINTS than what you are offering. For example, John Doe becomes free agent eligible and you offer him five points, which means every other team will have to begin their bidding at 15 points. If you raise your bid to 7 points, every other team will need to raise their bid to 17 points to "be in the lead" for that free agent. "Starting Rosters" submitted after the first playoff game will not be accepted, so hand in your starting roster as soon as possible.

Two things need to be in order for this perk to apply to your free agent(s).

• (1) The player MUST be listed as a starter on the starting roster you provide. Disgruntled players serving in a secondary role want to play just as badly (if not more so) as they want money.
  
• (2) The player must also have appeared on your roster from the very first season, or they must have been ORIGINALLY drafted by you. Players who sign as free agents, or whom you trade do not have the same level of loyalty. And if they do, it will not be represented in this system. So don't bother arguing.
  

What else does this mean? "Blockbuster contracts" for original, Year I players, or players you have personally drafted, only cost 70 points now. You must still pay the full 80 for players you traded for or signed in free agency.

This accomplishes two things.

• (1) It further punishes teams who do not utilize their draft picks appropriately. From day one, I have wanted this league to be one where draft picks are properly and REALISTICALLY utilized, and not just tossed around flippantly for established players.
  
• (2) It helps teams who build their team through the draft to maintain their roster. Players will always leave, but crafty General Managers should be able to keep the core of their team intact with franchise tags, blockbuster contracts, leftover points on underrated players, and the draft for filling voids.
  

Your "Starting Roster" must contain the following.

Offense:
1 QB, 1 RB, 1 FB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 lineman at their NATIVE position

Defense: (State whether you are a 4-3 or a 3-4 team, and list your starters appropriately)
4-3 teams: 1 RE, 2 DT, 1 LE, 1 LOLB, 1 MLB, 1 ROLB, 2 CB, 1 FS, 1 SS
3-4 teams: 1 RE, 1 DT, 1 LE, 1 LOLB, 2 MLB, 1 ROLB, 2 CB, 1 FS, 1 SS

Final note: If you feel another team has lied about who is on their starting roster (listing a veteran as a starter when in reality a younger player is playing in their place in an effort to keep a veteran) you can challenge that team's claim. If at the end of the season the "downs played" stat is inconsistent with that players Starting Roster, that player will forfeit his "hometown discount" perk and ALL free agency points. Fuck with the bull and you'll get the horns.
